An autobiographical black-and-white graphic novel. Marjane Satrapi tells how, at about ten, she lives through the Islamic Revolution in Tehran and has to start wearing the veil, and follows her growing up between Iran and Europe; the story of a country and that of a girl who won't accept injustice move forward together.

Who it's for
For readers interested in Iran's recent history or in memoirs told as comics; it mixes irony and humour with hard subjects such as the oppression of women. In the United States its place in schools has been contested because of its language and images.
Why people still read it
It has been translated into many languages and had sold more than two million copies by 2018. Its animated film adaptation, co-directed by Satrapi, won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2007.

Why we only look at used copies

In Spain, Law 10/2007 fixes the price of new books: the publisher sets it and shops can only take 5% off. Amazon, FNAC and your local bookshop all cost the same. The only place the price moves is second-hand.
