Your Kindle highlights, as Markdown

Drop your Kindle's My Clippings.txt and download your highlights and notes grouped by book. It is read in your browser: the file is not uploaded.

or

The text file your Kindle keeps. Below we explain where to find it.

Where your My Clippings.txt is

  1. Connect the Kindle to your computer with a USB cable. It shows up as a drive or a folder, named after your Kindle.
  2. Open the documents folder. My Clippings.txt is there, with everything you highlighted and noted, including in books you sent to the Kindle yourself.
  3. Drop it here without opening it or saving it in another program first.

What it includes, and what it doesn't

It only holds what you highlighted on that Kindle: not other Kindles, and not the phone or tablet apps, even on the same account. It is a log: if you delete or edit a highlight on the Kindle, the old entry can stay in the file. Amazon stops saving highlights in a store book once it reaches the limit the publisher sets, sometimes around 10% of the book, so a heavy highlighter can see an incomplete list. Bookmarks are not included.

What the Markdown looks like

One file, with a section per book, the author, highlights as quotes and notes apart, with the position and the date the Kindle recorded. The text is escaped so it doesn't turn into links or headings when you open it.

Your file stays on your device

My Clippings.txt is read and converted in this tab: the file is not uploaded and we don't keep your highlights. The only thing sent is an anonymous count of uses and how they ended (read, file not recognised, downloaded…), with no titles or text.
