Summer 1947, in a village in the Sierra Sur of Jaén. Nino, nine years old, lives in the Civil Guard barracks because his father is a guardsman, and befriends Pepe the Portuguese, a stranger who has settled in a remote mill and whom he comes to admire. As he starts typing lessons at a farmhouse run by women on their own and discovers adventure novels, he realises there is a war going on in the hills that no one has explained to him.

Why we only look at used copies

In Spain, Law 10/2007 fixes the price of new books: the publisher sets it and shops can only take 5% off. Amazon, FNAC and your local bookshop all cost the same. The only place the price moves is second-hand.
