Patti Smith's memoir of her relationship with the artist Robert Mapplethorpe, whom she met in July 1967, when they were both very young. It follows their shared life as artists starting out in New York, up to their move into the Chelsea Hotel, in the world of Allen Ginsberg and Andy Warhol. Smith wrote it to keep a promise she made to Mapplethorpe before his death in 1989.

Who it's for
For readers interested in music, art and late-1960s New York, and in stories of friendship. It is more a tribute than an exercise in nostalgia, and it has plenty of humour.
Why people still read it
It won the 2010 National Book Award for Nonfiction, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and made the New York Times bestseller list. In 2026 Patti Smith received the Princess of Asturias Award.

Why we only look at used copies

In Spain, Law 10/2007 fixes the price of new books: the publisher sets it and shops can only take 5% off. Amazon, FNAC and your local bookshop all cost the same. The only place the price moves is second-hand.
