Stefan Zweig's memoir, written during his years of exile and published posthumously in Stockholm in 1942. Through personal memories and detailed anecdotes it portrays Vienna and Europe before the First World War, with their schooling, sexual morals and cultural life, and follows the author's path through the wars, with portraits of figures such as Rilke, Hofmannsthal, Romain Rolland and Freud.

Who it's for
For readers of history and memoirs who want to understand how the collapse of Habsburg Europe was lived. Worth knowing: it is a reserved memoir that says little about his private life and does not analyse Nazism in depth.
Why people still read it
It is regarded as the best-known book about the Habsburg Empire. It has been translated into Spanish several times since 1947; the recent edition has a translation by José Rafael Hernández Arias, previously unseen photographs and an afterword by Jordi Amat.

Written with the help of AI from todostuslibros and Wikipedia, without giving away the ending, and reviewed by a person.

Why we only look at used copies

In Spain, Law 10/2007 fixes the price of new books: the publisher sets it and shops can only take 5% off. Amazon, FNAC and your local bookshop all cost the same. The only place the price moves is second-hand.
