Quino

Quino, the pen name of Joaquín Salvador Lavado (Mendoza, Argentina, 1932-2020), was an Argentine cartoonist and comics artist, the son of Andalusian emigrants, who also took Spanish citizenship in 1990. His best-known work is Mafalda, the strip he drew from 1964 to 1973 about a six-year-old girl who looks critically at the adult world. After ending it he kept publishing humour pages about ordinary people, sharp in tone but also tender.

What critics say

Mafalda is praised for using social satire to comment on real problems, has been compared to Peanuts and was translated into many languages; in Franco's Spain censorship forced it to be labelled as adult reading. In 2014 Quino received the Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities.
